A 14 year girl from Belfast, Northern Ireland is suing Facebook for her naked pictures are posted on a “shame page” on the site.Facebook tried to have the matter thrown out but a High Court judge last week rejected the social media giant’s argument.
The girl is suing the Facebook and the person who uploaded the photo in what lawyers claim is believed to be the first case of its kind in the world. The girl’s lawyers allege that the photo was obtained through blackmail and then repeatedly posted on a “shame page” on Facebook several times between November 2014 and January this year, Sky News UK reports.
Girl’s lawyers say that Facebook should have blocked the image and argued further that Facebook should use “fingerprinting” technology to prevent photo from multiple uploads. But Facebook insists it doesn’t have to do that under European law, Dublin’s 98FM reports and Facebook spokeswoman said there was “no place for this kind of content on Facebook and we remove it when it’s reported to us. As outlined in our community standards, nudity and sexual exploitation are not allowed.”
Facebook changed its community standards in 2012 to crack down on revenge pornography and “sextortion”, banning nude images when they are reported. It also works with charities to target paedophile networks and on “think before you share” campaigns, said a Facebook spokeswoman.
This case may be one of its type but it has alarmed the tech world and the companies operating with visual content like images and videos especially those published without permission. This case has opened the flood-gates for all other social media sites as well. People on the internet are also commenting about the situation as we should stop photographing such images and don’t ruin our privacy and keep ourselves away from the shame.
