Samsung Electronics Co Ltd has stopped the production of its flagship smartphone Galaxy Note 7 following the reports of fires in replacement devices. Many Galaxy Note 7 phones — the ones Samsung claimed were safe after a recall — caught fire and caused at least one person to admit in hospital.
The suspension new came from Korean news agency Yonhap on Monday, a further setback for South Korean technology giant trying to oversee its worst ever phone recall crisis.
Samsung halted Galaxy Note 7 production in cooperation with safety regulator authorities in China and the United States, as two US carriers have already stopped exchanging and selling new Note 7 phones, Yonhap News Agency reported citing an unidentified source close to Samsung production unit.
Samsung, however, didn’t immediately confirmed or denied the production stoppage reports. Situation is getting worst for Samsung since Note 7 batteries explosion issue popup first. The company recalled 1 million devices from US market last month alone, adding up the total recalled phones to 2.5 million.
A Southwest Airline flight was evacuated earlier this week after a replacement model Note 7 smartphone began smoking inside the plane, according to the family who owns the phone.
Samsung earlier said it was investigating reports of “heat damage issues” and would share its findings when the investigation is complete.
“If we determine a product safety issue exists, Samsung will take immediate steps approved by the CPSC (US Consumer Product Safety Commission) to resolve the situation,” Samsung told Reuters in a statement.
